The best birthday ever!

Ever wonder being a cake decorator, what type of cake would you want to receive on your birthday?

This has been a question I have been asking myself.. but never get a answer. After being a cake decorator, I have no more birthday cakes to celebrate as many of my friends would reckon I will and can bake cake for myself. To be honest, I don't. I always feel that is funny to bake and decorate my own birthday cake. So, for these few years I have no cake on my birthday.

So as usual, birthday is just another day, I normally will just be a couch potato for a day. Strangely, hubby keep arranging me to go shopping with my sis. He even went all the way out to arrange us to have lunch and tea after. Well, I thought that's pretty nice thought. OK, I have to take the offer, why not? Since everything is paid for.

I went home pretty late, and when I opened the door, I was overdose with the smell of chocolate! I was thinking I am out the whole day and who can be baking in my kitchen. I quickly hurried to the kitchen thinking could  it be I have accidentally leave the oven switch auto on....When I stepped into my kitchen, I am surprised with a cake bake by hubby. The cake was pretty nicely laid on the table. I have no idea how he can bake without my knowledge. Looking at his masterpiece, I am speechless!

Thou is not a decorative cake, I am happy enough that he put in effort to make me one. I think this has to be my best birthday cake ever. Thank you darling!I feel so blessed.

Inspiration to Creation

Alright, I know I have been quiet after my trip back from Hong Kong.

Let's do a quick update of what is happening on my end. Lately everyone is talking about putting inspiration to creation. Oh well, that's pretty true. Who doesn't need inspiration in everything you do. Remember months back, I did a flower girl cake, it was totally an inspiration I took from a picture when I google for a flower girl dress.

Just a few days ago, I saw a post by Sharon Wee, she was so talking about Inspiration to Creation, which I think she pretty much make an effort in explaining every little details of how she put every inspiration into one piece of creation. It was an awesome post. Take some time  and read on (if you are keen, cos is a very long post).

Yesterday, I shared a book by Carolyne Roehm on my Hapicakes Facebook page. Is a book about all flowers. I am a crazy fans of all pretty flowers, and it was that book I gather all inspirations in making sugar flowers. There's lots of pretty flowers featured on that book, and do check out on some of pretty flowers I shared on my business page.

Before signing off, I so wanting to share this piece of news... Yes, counting down to my new face look of my website. After waiting for a 3 long years, I finally decided to get it done. And I do have a kind soul to help me with the website.... can't wait!!!

Oriental Peonies on Top 3

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular festival celebration by the Chinese. This festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, during a full moon, which is happening this month on the 19 Sept.

Very often, during any Chinese festival, Oriental peonies are always a popular flowers seen in every family. As such, I am revisiting my Oriental Peonies I did for this festival.

And yes, peonies are my top favourite sugar flowers. Super excited to know that my Oriental Peonies made into the Top 3 again... glad to know that my skill in making sugar flowers was recognised by many...Love you all...

I am back in action... not for long thou.. :P

A big hello and I am back from my back to back holidays... to where, nah, just a short one to Taiwan and Bangkok! But this leave me with only a few more days before I am leaving for another holiday, and this time a slightly longer period... :) I thought I would have time to relax before my next trip, but was tasked with another children cake. This time a more tedious and detailed sort.

You know, I am not really a children type of cake decorator. Give me a flower, anytime, I swear I can make a more realistic sugar flower than doing figurines. But being a cake decorator, never say no to anything. After working for days, and I can proudly show you my master piece, with all the detailing work on the small little flowers on the cake.

Can you see the little bunny in the tree hole?

Whoa, I have won 4th place!

Never expected that My Flower Girl cake made it into CakesDecor Summer 2013 Quarterly Award Competition. There were a total of 211 cakes in this competition and I have won 4th place! Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! This was really a very encouraging "award" for me.

To be frank, cake decorating is still a very new and challenging "job" for me. Of course, I won't dare to compare myself to those big names like Mike, Debbie, Nicholas, Handi, Joseph, Bowen..... I started cake decorating 3 years back and to be able to make into 4th place, is indeed... the feeling is GOOD!!! (Yes, allow me to enjoy this few moment of fame!!! :)

Another award winning cake

Oh well, no words can express how excited I am. Shortly after 2 weeks, Cakes Decor present me another Top 3 award for My Flower Girl cake.

This cake was inspired by a picture I saw on Google. The moment I saw the flower girl dress, I immediately fall in love with it. Inspiration is just something will strike by day by day. And this is it.. so much in love that I have decided to turn it into a cake.

First thing first, making sugar flower is a tiring project, and I have to make 4 different types of flowers for this cake. Rose, sweet pea, hydrangea and filler flowers. Sugar flowers are so fragile and which resulting I have to sort of double up what I am doing cos I know I am a clumsy person when it comes to putting so many flowers together on a cake. Breakage is unavoidable. Nevertheless, I am so proud of what I did and yes, my cake was in the number 1 position. Thanks Cakes Decor for making it happened. And all my fans out there! Love!

I am obsessed with rrrrruffles.....

I think I am seriously obsessed with ruffles... especially on cakes. Partly I guess I must have been inspired by Maggie Austin. I just obsessed all her work. Detail, precise, sharp and clean cut. Previously I did a wedding cake with the inspiration of one of her cake idea.

Green Cymbidium Ruffles Wedding Cake

Today, I did another engagement cake with a tweak of my own ruffling. This is definitely a much more easy, detail and clean cut way to have it on cakes. I am loving the way how the ruffling turned out on this cake of mine.

Many a times, when we decorate a cake, we tense to go overboard by having non-stop decorations on it. That is why I always remind myself constantly, never do this again. I used to love having lots of different componet on a cake… but sometimes, someday… Less is more, simplicity is beauty…
I seriously love seeing ruffles on cakes, specially on wedding or engagement cakes…
